Northern Ireland has the second highest rate of female hair loss in the UK. According to the findings, almost a quarter (23%) of women in Northern Ireland are either suffering or have suffered from hair loss – putting the province just behind Scotland. Of those, around 75% said they had suffered severe emotional distress from developing the conditions and 14% even said they would be tempted to cancel social engagements or call in sick at work if they were having a bad skin or bad hair day. More than three quarters of Ulster respondents said they felt there was very little information regarding thinning hair for women, saying that it was more commonly accepted as a problem for men and… read more

Watching James Nesbitt on GMTV was an interesting experience. The talented Irish actor never seems to be out of a job and is one of the very few British character actors around. Part of his character is his thinning hair. It suits him. I watched an interview with him a couple of years ago where he said that he regretted losing his hair (OK heard that one before), however it has enabled him to be cast in so many interesting parts where his receding hairline was part of his character. It also didn’t stop him being very attractive to the fairer sex. (thanks to facebook for the photograph) I was therefore surprised to see him on GMTV this morning, with… read more

There is a lot of jargon around regarding hair loss and one of the descriptions people use to describe their hair loss if referring to the Norwood scale of hairloss which is often abbreviated to NW1 etc. The correct terms for normal hair loss (and hair loss in men is pretty normal) is androgenic alopecia. The scale goes from Norwood 1 to Norwood 7. Norwood 7 is what we are all trying to avoid and involves a total hair loss from the top of the head with only the hair around the sides remaining. NWI. This is where hairloss has just begun and is not really noticeable NW2. This is just where there is a very small amount of hair… read more

In short yes. The two directors of Pro Hair Biosystems are both users of ProFusion System. One noticed his hair was receding in his late 20′s and this gradually got worse. He tried a number of hair loss treatments such as American Crew and Schwarzkopf products, but the only hair loss product which stabilised the loss was ProFusion, although the American Crew product seemed quite good for a while. The Schwarzkopf product he suspected may have been making his hair loss worse. He knows first hand, what it is like to have hair loss, having been bald on his crown for 20 years or so (he knows that area won’t regrow), but when the remainder started to disappear rapidly he… read more

So how would you know if you are losing your hair? Basically you look for changes in your hair. The very earliest signs of hair loss is often that your hair looking less lively and duller than previously, despite using good quality shampoo and conditioner. It just seems a little bit lifeless. The next signs you might typically see is the early stages of actual hair loss, which is an increased number of hairs around the bath each time you wash your hair. Everyone loses some hair each time they wash their hair, but people who are beginning to go bald, see a definite increase. The exact signs of hair loss and thinning hair vary from person to person, but… read more

So how many hairs do you expect to lose each day anyway? The experts say that a man typically loses around 100 hairs every day. When we are children or before showing any signs of hair loss, these lost hairs are replaced in the normal cycle of hair growth. When hair loss occurs, the lost hair begins to be replaced by (literally) a thinner hair, and then thinner shorter hairs until eventually the root fails to produce a hair follicle at all. When this happens the hair root is still capable of producing a hair for a while, but once no hair has been produced for a few years, the jury is out on whether it will ever be able… read more
